How to Replace a Saab 9-3 Key
The Saab 9-3 has a good variety of appeal to drivers. It is powerful and has excellent visibility. It also has a great safety rating.
It is nevertheless important to ensure that you have two working keys for your car. If you lose just one key, it can be very expensive to add a new one.
How to Replace the Ignition Key in a Saab9-3
If your car's keys won't turn in the ignition it is time to replace it. This guide will walk you through the steps to do it on the Saab 9-3. You'll need a replacement key with a reprogrammable battery and a brand new key-fob cover.
Unlike older models, most modern Saab cars use transponders in the key-fob instead of a physical key to unlock and start the vehicle. The problem with this is that the reprogrammable batteries in the key-fob will wear out and not hold a charge anymore. This is particularly when you keep using the same key on the same lock.
A professional locksmith can replace the battery quickly. If you've got the right tools, and a little patience you can do it yourself. The first step is taking the key-fob from its case. Insert a flathead into the slot in the middle of your case. You must work slowly, since the plastic is very thin and can be damaged easily.
After the case has been opened then you can prepare the new key by combining the lower half of the key that was used previously with the banana and transponder on the new key. This will ensure that the new key is connected to the CIM properly, which can make all the difference when replacing the primary key for your Saab 9-3.
How to Replace the Ignition Key in a Saab 900
If you don't have two keys you'll have to remove the dashboard and steering wheel to get to the ignition. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. After the battery has been disconnected, you can remove all the trim pieces as well as dashboard pieces that surround the steering wheel. Once the dash is removed, you can put a screwdriver through the opening in the back of the ignition switch and take it out.
The ignition cylinder comes with a lock for keys that could stop the vehicle from starting if it does not contain the key. If your 900's ignition isn't working, check the key to see whether it's inside the lock or in the barrel of ignition. You should also rotate your keys and keep them clean to prevent being bent.
Saab cars differ from other cars because they don't use traditional keys made of metal. Instead, the car is able to recognize electric signals from the key fob by using the use of a special microchip.
If you only lose one working key fob, your dealer will charge an extra fee to replace your computer module (also called the CIM). We can reprogram the EEPROM of your computer to enable it to accept new keys without the need for replacement. You'll save 50% on the price charged by the dealer! We call it the SAAB Key PROGRAM. How to replace the ignition Key in the Saab9-5
The metal part of a classic Saab key is easy to copy, and not much of an impediment against vehicle theft. The real protection is the electronic component in the key-fob, which is equipped with a chip that detects the car when it is inserted into the ignition switch.

Saab has relied on the technology of this anti-theft device for over a decade. It's not as secure as a physical lock on the door, but it does make stealing your own car significantly more difficult. This is the reason why every Saab owner should always keep an extra key in their possession.
The majority of new Saabs come with two keys, but they can be added by the dealer's expense using a handheld device called a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception to this rule is NG 9-3 vehicles, with more modern, newer features that require keys-fobs.
The dealer will replace the CIM or TWICE module of those cars if the keys are lost, and they'll cost you top dollar to do it. However, we can reprogram your EEPROM in your existing computer and set it up to accept new keys, without having to replace the expensive modules.
How do I replace the ignition Key in a Saab XC90
If your SAAB 9-3 key fob begins having problems turning the barrel of the lock it could be time to replace it. Fortunately, saab 9-3 key fob replacement is rather simple and doesn't need you to visit a dealer. You can complete the process at home using just a few basic tools.
The first step is to prepare the new key. Before you begin, ensure that the anti-theft device is disabled by placing blocks on your rear wheels, and then adjusting the handbrake. Then, you can insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position that activates the accessories, but it doesn't start the engine. Repeat this procedure five times, and then leave the key in the on position.
Next, you'll need to purchase a new case for your key fob. They are readily available at many auto parts stores and are typically inexpensive. You can get them without electronics depending on the model.
To open up the case, place a flathead screwdriver in the slot that is in the middle. Gently work it. After you've separated the case, you'll have access to all of the internal electronic components. To remove the electronics employ a small screwdriver and try prying them out in a gentle manner.
